Guides and repair information for washing machines produced by GE, an engineering and technology company in the US.

Missing model number/serial number

My dad is looking for a part for his GE washing machine and his repairman told him he couldn't get the part since the model number and serial number are missing from the machine. I find this hard to believe. Does anyone know another way of finding the model number/serial number?

Update (09/03/2016)

Thank you. The machine is 6-7 years old.

If you can find the model number, you may need the manual. You can try here for manuals:

Do you have a picture of the washing machine? Do you know when it was purchased?

Maybe this link will help:

@molloy3 open the lid and check for any tag. Same with the back. Post some images of any tag with your question. You'll have to edit your question to add the images. They will not show up if you post them as comments. Again, any tag may help.

I had this problem too. The model number was inside the lid and was so faded I couldn’t read it. I still had the owners manual and all the paperwork, etc.

I never sent in the card to register it ....the model number and serial # was on the registration card!

For top loader-the model/serial number may be found in the following places:

1 under lid, near the right hinge

2 exterior,on the back of the control panel

3 exterior front,bottom left corner

4 exterior back, near the water inlets

Inside the back of the machine there should be a wiring diagram. Check that. OR Get the part number from the timer, (Paper tag on timer) cross reference that.

Professional Tips if the Model/Serial Number Is Missing

  1. Check Common Locations – Manufacturers usually place tags/stickers in standard spots:
    • Inside the door or lid frame
    • Behind the appliance (back panel)
    • On the side wall near the bottom
    • Behind the control panel or kick plate
    • For washers/dryers: around the drum opening or under the lid
  2. Look for a Digital Label – Some modern machines store the model/serial in their electronic system. Check the display panel menu or service mode (manuals often explain how to access it).
  3. Check Paperwork – User manuals, warranty cards, receipts, or delivery paperwork often list the full model/serial number.
  4. Manufacturer Account – If you registered the product online, log into your account; the model and serial should be stored there.
  5. Contact Support – Provide the brand, approximate year of purchase, and photos of the appliance. Many service reps can identify the model based on features, design, or control layout.
  6. Use the Part Number – If you find a part number on any removable piece (filter, hose, control board), service centers can often trace it back to the exact model.
  7. Don’t Guess for Repairs – Never order parts without confirming the model/serial, since even small variations between models can change compatibility.

Bottom line: Start by checking the appliance itself in hidden spots, then move to paperwork, online registration, or customer support. Having the model/serial number saves time, money, and ensures correct troubleshooting or parts ordering.
